The World of Luxury watches: A legend is Born

Legend has it that the wristwatch first became popular in World War I.

It was an unusual development that required some explanation. Until then, women had mainly worn wristwatches as pieces of jewellery. What could be practical about a decorative ornament?

But after World War I, the population at large rapidly adopted the fad. It seemed civilians were taking their cues from soldiers and aviators, who found it impractical to fumble around in a pocket to find their watches while engaging with the enemy.

It was far more convenient to carry the time on their arms.

So, within a decade, pocket watches had become a thing of the past.

And the modern wristwatch was born, throwing open the door to the mass market, instead of relegating the time pieces to women’s fashion.

That’s not to say the early-20th century gave birth to the biggest designer names. Ever since the creation of the first wristwatch in 1868 for Countess Koscowicz of Hungary, Swiss watch manufacturers like Patek Philippe, Breguet, Vacheron Constantin have been creating unique watches to meet the ever-growing market. Those names have persevered through the decades.

Naturally enough, though, it will come as no surprise to discover that those 19th-century Swiss wristwatches are now regarded as vintage pieces and, consequently, highly collectable.

In fact, there are some claims that pocket watches were adapted for the wrist prior to 1868, perhaps even as early as the 1570s. Any quality finds from that period would command a substantial sum, as well.

But as the wristwatch market has grown over the years, grabbing the attention of high-end designers, even modern watches are of collectible quality.

And you don’t have to be incredibly wealthy to start acquiring them.

It is a common misconception that investing in watches is for the elite. But you do not have to be a big spender at all to make an entry into this market.

It is not a question of how much you can invest, but rather how you formulate your investment choices. I believe it is important that you always approach your investment by selecting an authentic watch in good condition.

As with all investment grade material in tangible assets, the key to a successful investment is quality above everything else.

That’s why I’ve put together a report. With it, new investors will have a reference for starting their own quality watch collections.

And as history has shown, those collections can turn into successful investments, particularly in recent years…
